The trailer for Jennifer Lopez’s new movie “Marry Me” dropped on YouTube a week ago. It’s been

viewed 6.9 million times (as of now). Several people, including myself, found ourselves mesmerized by the

plot and chemistry between the two leads. Jennifer Lopez even recorded some new songs for the

upcoming movie too.

“Marry Me” follows global superstar Kat (Jennifer Lopez) and her boyfriend Bastian (singer Maluma) as

they are the hottest couple ever. However, seconds before their planned wedding in front of 20 million

people, Kat finds out that Bastian is cheating on her. In a desperate attempt, she impulsively marries math

teacher Charlie Graham (Owen Wilson). What starts as a crazy decision soon develops into a sweet

romance.

“Marry Me” is somewhat original in terms of the plot. It’s based on a web comic of the same name.

Nonetheless, I’m excited about “Marry Me” for 3 reasons.

1. It’s probably going back to the innocent days. Jennifer Lopez starred in “The Wedding Planner” in

2001, which was an innocent romantic comedy. She played Mary an independent woman who falls for

Eddie (Matthew McConaughey). Little does she know that Eddie is engaged to Fran, who’s wedding she is

planning.

In a way, “Marry Me” seems to sweeten the romance instead of sexualize it. In this day and age where

romance is relying on hormones and premarital sex, “Marry Me” might suggest that there is more to falling

in love than those two traits alone. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on this reason, hoping “Marry Me” delivers.

2. The film might show a positive father-daughter relationship. It’s clear that even though Charlie is

divorced, he greatly cares for his daughter. Many movies tend to pit father against daughter, so this could

be a refreshing take on this topic. More importantly, Charlie’s daughter notices that he’s not himself, only

burying his grief in working as a teacher. It’s too early to tell, but hopefully the movie will manifest this

father-daughter relationship.

3. “Marry Me” implies that celebrity life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Though Kat likes being a singer,

it’s indicated she would like a normal life. One scene in the trailer shows her dancing with the kids at

Charlie’s school, just relaxing and having a fun time. It reminds us that fame won’t satisfy and sometimes

the best things we have are right in front of us.

“Marry Me” could be a delightful romantic comedy or a total fail. We’ll have to see what happens when

it hits theaters on February 11, 2022. Stay tuned for my review of “Marry Me” after I watch it.
